Carbonitriding

Increase Surface Hardness with a Case Hardening Process

Carbonitriding is a case hardening process and metallurgical surface modification technique that is used to increase the surface hardness of a metal, thereby reducing wear. During the process, atoms of carbon and nitrogen diffuse interstitially into the metal, creating barriers to slip, increasing the hardness and modulus near the surface. This method produces a hard and wear resistant surface for lower alloyed steels such as mild steel that could not be achieved with gas carburizing alone. Due to a lower temperature, distortion and the risk of quench cracking are reduced.
